https://www.linkedin.com/shareArticle?mini=true&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FCoconutOilandAlzheimers%2Fposts%2F907556196049129&title=ON%20COCONUT%20OIL%20AND%20THE%20AHA%3A%20RESPONSE%20BY%20MARY%20NEWPORT%20MD%20TO%20THE%20AHA%20ADVISORY%20COMMITTEE%20ON%20DIETARY%20FATS%20AND%20CARDIOVASCULAR%20DISEASE%20The%20media%20has%20irresponsibly%20taken%20viral%20a%20fragment%20of%20information%20purporting%20that%20coconut%20oil%20may%20be%20bad%20for%20your%20heart%20from%20an%20article%20published%20in%20the%20medical%20journal%20%26quot%3BCirculation%26quot%3B%202017%2C%20135%3Ae1-24%2C%20as%20a%20presidential%20advisory%20committee%20report%20from%20the%20AHA%2C%20%26quot%3BDietary%20Fats%20and%20Cardiovascular%20Disease%26quot%3B.%20%20The%20coconut%20oil%20industry%20on%20the%20other%20side%20of%20the%20world%2C%20mainly%20comprised%20of%20small%20farmers%20who%20grow%20and%20sell%20their%20coconuts%2C%20is%20reeling%20from%20the%20effects%20of%20this%20latest%20careless%20media%20campaign.%20%20They%20have%20only%20recently%20been%20recovering%20from%20the%20previous%20advisory%20put%20forth%20by%20the%20AHA.%20%20There%20are%20some%20serious%20problems%20with%20the%20conclusions%20of%20the%20advisory%20committee.%20%20The%20four%20%26quot%3Bcore%20studies%26quot%3B%20this%20committee%20relied%20on%20were%20all%20conducted%20in%20the%201950s%2C%20were%20relatively%20small%20groups%20of%20%26quot%3Bmen%20only%26quot%3B%20in%20three%20of%20the%20four%20studies%2C%20were%20conducted%20in%20populations%20that%20almost%20certainly%20were%20not%20consuming%20coconut%20oil%20on%20any%20regular%20basis%2C%20and%20were%20studies%20comparing%20diets%20with%20ANIMAL%20saturated%20fats%20to%20diets%20with%20polyunsaturated%20fats.%20Animal%20and%20human%20fat%20is%20well%20known%20to%20store%20hormones%2C%20pesticides%2C%20antibiotics%20and%20other%20environmental%20substances%2C%20which%20could%20be%20factors%20in%20heart%20disease%2C%20whereas%20vegetable%20fats%20such%20as%20coconut%20oil%20would%20not%20be%20so%20likely%20to%20contain%20these%20potentially%20harmful%20substances.The%20authors%20do%20not%20mention%20whether%20age%20and%20smoking%20were%20controlled%20for%20in%20these%20studies%3B%20smoking%2C%20which%20was%20very%20prevalent%20in%20the%201950s%20compared%20to%20the%202010%27s%20is%20a%20major%20contributor%20to%20heart%20disease.%20The%20raw%20numbers%20of%20how%20many%20people%20in%20each%20group%20had%20cardiac%20events%20was%20not%20presented%2C%20making%20the%20summaries%20difficult%20to%20evaluate.%20The%20clincher%20in%20this%20article%20is%20that%20they%20state%20on%20page%20e13%2C%20under%20the%20section%20on%20coconut%20oil%2C%20%26quot%3BClinical%20trials%20that%20compared%20direct%20effects%20on%20CVD%20%5Bcardiovascular%20disease%5D%20of%20coconut%20oil%20and%20other%20dietary%20oils%20have%20not%20been%20reported.%26quot%3B%20They%20rely%20on%20studies%20of%20individual%20saturated%20fatty%20acids%20that%20show%20a%20miniscule%20increase%20in%20LDL%20%28so%20called%20%26quot%3Bbad%26quot%3B%29%20cholesterol%20but%20rationalize%20away%20a%20similar%20small%20increase%20in%20HDL%20%28so%20called%20%26quot%3Bgood%26quot%3B%29%20cholesterol%20and%20an%20improved%20LDL%20to%20HDL%20ratio.%20For%20example%2C%20lauric%20acid%20%2850%25%20of%20coconut%20oil%29%20resulted%20in%20a%20less%20than%201%20mg%2Fdl%20point%20increase%20in%20both%20LDL%20and%20HDL%20cholesterol%2C%20with%20typical%20LDL%20values%20ranging%20from%20less%20than%20100%20to%20160%20mg%2Fdl.%20Could%20a%20change%20of%20less%20than%201%20mg%2Fdl%20really%20have%20that%20much%20impact%3FIn%20addition%2C%20the%20problem%20here%20is%20that%20natural%20fats%20such%20as%20coconut%20oil%20and%20even%20lard%20do%20not%20come%20as%20individual%20fatty%20acids%20but%20rather%20as%20combinations%20of%20many%20fatty%20acids%20with%20different%20properties%2C%20which%20may%20balance%20each%20other%20out.%20Completely%20ignored%20in%20this%20report%20are%20the%20saturated%20fats%20in%20coconut%20oil%20known%20as%20medium%20chain%20triglycerides%20that%20could%20balance%20out%20the%20longer%20chain%20fats.%20Coconut%20oil%20also%20contains%20some%20mono-%20and%20polyunsaturated%20fats%2C%20tauted%20as%20healthy%20by%20this%20committee.%20One%20of%20the%20most%20important%20details%20that%20the%20AHA%20is%20missing%20here%20is%20that%2070%25%20of%20the%20saturated%20fats%20in%20coconut%20oil%20are%20medium%20chain%20triglycerides%20%28C6%20through%20C12%29%20which%20are%20either%20converted%20to%20ketones%20or%20burned%20immediately%20as%20fuel%20by%20muscle%20and%20other%20organs%20and%20not%20stored%20as%20fat.%20Lauric%20acid%20has%20some%20properties%20of%20medium%20chain%20and%20longer%20chain%20fatty%20acids.%20Ketones%20come%20from%20breakdown%20of%20fat%20and%20provide%20an%20alternative%20fuel%20to%20the%20brain%20and%20most%20other%20organs%20during%20starvation%20or%20fasting%20or%20to%20cells%20that%20are%20insulin%20resistant.%20In%20a%20recent%20study%20conducted%20in%20Japan%2C%20lauric%20acid%20was%20found%20to%20potently%20stimulate%20ketone%20production%20in%20astrocytes%20in%20cultures%3B%20astrocytes%20are%20brain%20cells%20that%20nourish%20other%20brain%20cells.%20By%20comparison%2C%20butter%2C%20lard%20and%20animal%20fat%20contain%20minimal%20medium%20chain%20triglycerides%20and%20medium%20chains%20are%20not%20found%20in%20soybean%2C%20olive%2C%20corn%2C%20safflower%20and%20most%20other%20oils.%20There%20are%20hundreds%20of%20studies%20of%20potential%20benefits%20of%20coconut%20oil%3B%20for%20example%2C%20lauric%20acid%2C%20which%20makes%20up%20about%2050%25%20of%20coconut%20oil%2C%20is%20antimicrobial%20-%20there%20are%20numerous%20studies%20showing%20that%20lauric%20acid%20kills%20many%20bacteria%2C%20viruses%2C%20fungi%20like%20candida%20and%20protozoa.%20%20%20Lauric%20acid%20is%20not%20found%20in%20any%20significant%20amount%20in%20soybean%2C%20corn%2C%20canola%20and%20olive%20oils.A%20few%20small%20cholesterol%20studies%20looking%20at%20coconut%20oil%20were%20conducted%20decades%20ago%20in%20animals%20or%20a%20few%20men%20over%20short%20term%20and%20used%20hydrogenated%20coconut%20oil%20-%20any%20hydrogenated%20oil%20will%20increase%20cholesterol.%20Also%2C%20the%20diets%20were%20deficient%20in%20omega-3%20fatty%20acids%20which%20can%20also%20increase%20cholesterol%20levels.%20There%20are%20studies%20of%20entire%20populations%20for%20whom%20coconut%20oil%20provides%201%2F3%20to%202%2F3%20of%20the%20diet%20showing%20that%20they%20were%20of%20normal%20height%20and%20weight%2C%20had%20normal%20blood%20pressure%2C%20triglycerides%20and%20cholesterol%20levels%20at%20all%20ages.The%20committee%20surmises%20that%20people%20who%20eat%20saturated%20fats%20likely%20have%20other%20bad%20eating%20habits%20without%20any%20proof.%20%20These%20days%2C%20many%2C%20if%20not%20most%2C%20of%20the%20people%20who%20embrace%20coconut%20oil%20are%20likely%20embracing%20healthier%20foods%20as%20well%20and%20a%20healthier%20lifestyle%20in%20general%20and%20eating%20fish%20and%2For%20taking%20omega-3%20fats%2C%20which%20weren%E2%80%99t%20on%20the%20radar%20in%20the%201950s%20when%20the%20so-called%20%E2%80%9Ccore%20studies%E2%80%9D%20for%20this%20report%20were%20conducted.The%20folks%20in%20the%20AHA%20and%20other%20organizations%20who%20perpetuate%20these%20myths%20about%20coconut%20oil%20need%20to%20really%20do%20their%20homework%20and%20learn%20more%20about%20medium%20chain%20triglycerides%20and%20study%20the%20other%20beneficial%20effects%20of%20coconut%20oil%2C%20which%20they%20choose%20to%20ignore.%20The%20point%20that%20some%20people%20may%20benefit%20from%20eating%20more%20polyunsaturated%20fat%20in%20place%20of%20animal%20fat%20may%20be%20very%20valid.%20%20However%2C%20coconut%20oil%20is%20not%20animal%20fat%20and%2C%20nevertheless%2C%20the%20bottom%20line%20that%20came%20out%20of%20their%20lengthy%20report%20is%20that%20%E2%80%9Ccoconut%20oil%20is%20bad%20for%20your%20heart%E2%80%9D%2C%20which%20has%20now%20been%20perpetuated%20by%20media%20who%20jumped%20on%20this%20conclusion%20that%20is%20not%20even%20based%20on%20direct%20research%20of%20coconut%20oil%20and%20heart%20disease.%20This%20message%20has%20gone%20viral%20worldwide.%20The%20impact%20of%20this%20could%20take%20a%20devastating%20toll%20on%20the%20economies%20of%20countries%20that%20produce%20coconut%20oil%2C%20mostly%20made%20up%20of%20individual%20farmers%20and%20their%20families%20trying%20to%20make%20a%20living.%20%20These%20economies%20were%20devastated%20in%20the%201960s%20and%20have%20been%20slowly%20recovering%20from%20the%20initial%20similar%20AHA%20statement%20on%20saturated%20fats%20in%201961%20based%20on%20the%20same%20four%20%E2%80%9Ccore%20studies%26quot%3B.%20%20It%20is%20irresponsible%20and%20unconscionable%20for%20this%20advisory%20committee%20to%20make%20such%20sweeping%20claims%20without%20direct%20proof%20that%20coconut%20oil%20causes%20heart%20disease.The%20AHA%20advisory%20committee%20should%20consider%20the%20negative%20impact%20their%20report%20has%20already%20had%20on%20the%20communities%20on%20the%20other%20side%20of%20the%20world%2C%20and%20issue%20a%20clarification%20that%20there%20is%20no%20direct%20proof%20that%20coconut%20oil%20has%20a%20negative%20effect%20on%20the%20heart.%20%20Then%20the%20committee%20needs%20to%20figure%20out%20how%20to%20make%20the%20clarification%20statement%20go%20viral.%20...%20

ecent%20study%20conducted%20in%20Japan%2C%20lauric%20acid%20was%20found%20to%20potently%20stimulate%20ketone%20production%20in%20astrocytes%20in%20cultures%3B%20astrocytes%20are%20brain%20cells%20that%20nourish%20other%20brain%20cells.%20By%20comparison%2C%20butter%2C%20lard%20and%20animal%20fat%20contain%20minimal%20medium%20chain%20triglycerides%20and%20medium%20chains%20are%20not%20found%20in%20soybean%2C%20olive%2C%20corn%2C%20safflower%20and%20most%20other%20oils.%20There%20are%20hundreds%20of%20studies%20of%20potential%20benefits%20of%20coconut%20oil%3B%20for%20example%2C%20lauric%20acid%2C%20which%20makes%20up%20about%2050%25%20of%20coconut%20oil%2C%20is%20antimicrobial%20-%20there%20are%20numerous%20studies%20showing%20that%20lauric%20acid%20kills%20many%20bacteria%2C%20viruses%2C%20fungi%20like%20candida%20and%20protozoa.%20%20%20Lauric%20acid%20is%20not%20found%20in%20any%20significant%20amount%20in%20soybean%2C%20corn%2C%20canola%20and%20olive%20oils.A%20few%20small%20cholesterol%20studies%20looking%20at%20coconut%20oil%20were%20conducted%20decades%20ago%20in%20animals%20or%20a%20few%20men%20over%20short%20term%20and%20used%20hydrogenated%20coconut%20oil%20-%20any%20hydrogenated%20oil%20will%20increase%20cholesterol.%20Also%2C%20the%20diets%20were%20deficient%20in%20omega-3%20fatty%20acids%20which%20can%20also%20increase%20cholesterol%20levels.%20There%20are%20studies%20of%20entire%20populations%20for%20whom%20coconut%20oil%20provides%201%2F3%20to%202%2F3%20of%20the%20diet%20showing%20that%20they%20were%20of%20normal%20height%20and%20weight%2C%20had%20normal%20blood%20pressure%2C%20triglycerides%20and%20cholesterol%20levels%20at%20all%20ages.The%20committee%20surmises%20that%20people%20who%20eat%20saturated%20fats%20likely%20have%20other%20bad%20eating%20habits%20without%20any%20proof.%20%20These%20days%2C%20many%2C%20if%20not%20most%2C%20of%20the%20people%20who%20embrace%20coconut%20oil%20are%20likely%20embracing%20healthier%20foods%20as%20well%20and%20a%20healthier%20lifestyle%20in%20general%20and%20eating%20fish%20and%2For%20taking%20omega-3%20fats%2C%20which%20weren%E2%80%99t%20on%20the%20radar%20in%20the%201950s%20when%20the%20so-called%20%E2%80%9Ccore%20studies%E2%80%9D%20for%20this%20report%20were%20conducted.The%20folks%20in%20the%20AHA%20and%20other%20organizations%20who%20perpetuate%20these%20myths%20about%20coconut%20oil%20need%20to%20really%20do%20their%20homework%20and%20learn%20more%20about%20medium%20chain%20triglycerides%20and%20study%20the%20other%20beneficial%20effects%20of%20coconut%20oil%2C%20which%20they%20choose%20to%20ignore.%20The%20point%20that%20some%20people%20may%20benefit%20from%20eating%20more%20polyunsaturated%20fat%20in%20place%20of%20animal%20fat%20may%20be%20very%20valid.%20%20However%2C%20coconut%20oil%20is%20not%20animal%20fat%20and%2C%20nevertheless%2C%20the%20bottom%20line%20that%20came%20out%20of%20their%20lengthy%20report%20is%20that%20%E2%80%9Ccoconut%20oil%20is%20bad%20for%20your%20heart%E2%80%9D%2C%20which%20has%20now%20been%20perpetuated%20by%20media%20who%20jumped%20on%20this%20conclusion%20that%20is%20not%20even%20based%20on%20direct%20research%20of%20coconut%20oil%20and%20heart%20disease.%20This%20message%20has%20gone%20viral%20worldwide.%20The%20impact%20of%20this%20could%20take%20a%20devastating%20toll%20on%20the%20economies%20of%20countries%20that%20produce%20coconut%20oil%2C%20mostly%20made%20up%20of%20individual%20farmers%20and%20their%20families%20trying%20to%20make%20a%20living.%20%20These%20economies%20were%20devastated%20in%20the%201960s%20and%20have%20been%20slowly%20recovering%20from%20the%20initial%20similar%20AHA%20statement%20on%20saturated%20fats%20in%201961%20based%20on%20the%20same%20four%20%E2%80%9Ccore%20studies%26quot%3B.%20%20It%20is%20irresponsible%20and%20unconscionable%20for%20this%20advisory%20committee%20to%20make%20such%20sweeping%20claims%20without%20direct%20proof%20that%20coconut%20oil%20causes%20heart%20disease.The%20AHA%20advisory%20committee%20should%20consider%20the%20negative%20impact%20their%20report%20has%20already%20had%20on%20the%20communities%20on%20the%20other%20side%20of%20the%20world%2C%20and%20issue%20a%20clarification%20that%20there%20is%20no%20direct%20proof%20that%20coconut%20oil%20has%20a%20negative%20effect%20on%20the%20heart.%20%20Then%20the%20committee%20needs%20to%20figure%20out%20how%20to%20make%20the%20clarification%20statement%20go%20viral.%20...%20
